i love pve and pvp
------------------
Anet crammed 2 games that do not fit into the same genre/playerbase together, and the results are destined to destroy one side or the other of that playerbase because of their bad decision to combine them.

i love pve and pvp
if people only like pve , its becose they dont have time to study guildwars , pvp requires 100 more times knolage then pve ...
the math , 450 skills , 30 profession combinations , 8 player limit , 8 skill limit ... this makes a huge number of possible combinations , and believe me , that who as the better espefiic 8 player build , comunication & team work , especific 8 * 8 skills combination , wins ...
so the only reason i could see for someone not likeing pvp is becose
a: no time to be good at
b: sad becose all trys in HoH are massacres of death
c: lack of good leader , build maker ...

I don't like PvP because...
Very very small, nobody (at least not me) gives a shit about stupid little 8vs8 GvG battles in really large guild halls capable of holding many more people, nobody cares about bringing a retarded ghost to an altar to win regardless of whether or not you can beat the other teams. GW is WAY to small scale, even the biggest battles (HoH) are RUINED because of how crappily the system of it is, there should be no ghost, it should be a massive fight to the death last team standing wins, simple as that. I don't play PvP to play Mary Lou's Teaparty with a few pissants, I play PvP in games to have some battles and fight like hell all day. If it was say, 30vs30+, in battles that never ended or something just you know, a war, then I'd enjoy it. It's too small and repetitive right now to have any fun in it.
PvP = bad
Reason = Really really tiny, pointless, and there's no motivation to do it at all. Mostly tiny though.
My opinions at least.

d. Some people simply enjoy pve more. We are free to do what we enjoy, be it PvP, PvE, farming (to some extent), trading, etc. It has absolutely nothing to do with our abilities or time available. Heck, some of the missions are an hour long! So, it's quite simple. Some people enjoy PvP and some enjoy PvE. Nothing more or less than that.

The Pve is rather small scale too, if you really want to nit pick. Anyone could say that with full confidence due to the unique world instancing involved and the npc challenge scale to suit the encounter. Hell, even ice flow feels like several scattered small skirmishes, instead of a large or lasting conflict.
Then again i have the curse of planetside upon me, so i know why i think that way. To expect anything remotely close to a mmo scale within the standards GW puts forward is setting yourself up to be disapointed though.

It's MADE like cake, hence the name. It LOOKS like pie because it's basicaly a flourless cake, and most of them DO look like pie.
I actualy agree with the OP in the sense that these 2 games have proven to be less than idealy compatable.
But saying PvE types don't like PvP ONLY because they lack the skill is a bit hard to support. They DO tend to lack that skill, but I would say it's the chicken that came first, not the egg. They lack the skill because they lack the necessary mentality to really get into it. And most of us know that we're unlikely to excell at something we don't really enjoy.
My Ex was horrible at games, all games. With her doctorate in hand, I'd argue she had the brains to do it if she wanted to. She asked me to teach he some games so she might be able to play with her patients, who are nearly all children.
She sucked at all of them, universaly. Chess, Stratego, EVERYTHING I could come up with. I'd guess that no more than .0005% of her brain was actualy focused on playing. She simply COULDN'T get into it, no matter how she might try. She DID try, as she knew I liked games, and she wanted it to be a thing we did together. Unfortunatly, trying doesn't equal success.

the quote in the original post has a very good point
the simple fact is that the "casual player" will never have any success whatsoever in Tombs PVP play
even a very good player will almost never have any success in Tombs PVP play, unless he happens to be in a very good Guild (which is not an easy thing to get into!)
IMO this isolates most of the PVE playerbase from being able to participate in PVP
hence, Guild Wars desperately needs 1vs1 PVP. i know the posts to follow will say "they can't balance that" and whatnot. to that i say: they better find a way to. because if not, then the only people to be playing Guild Wars PVP are going to be the super-aggressive hardcore of the hardcore players who are willing to put up with all the colossal frustrations involved with making an even semi-competent Tombs group

You're right, the PvE, is also small scale compared to many other games. I think the way they have it set up (PvP/PvE) just ruins it all, if it was something with PvP fully intertwined with PvE, say for example once you got past a certain point in the game, players could attack eachother at will and you had to look out for yourself, that'd be fun. It'd just seem much more invovled, and make the experience last, IMO.

Do you really think that it was a bad decision? Personally, I think that by making it so that PvP requires PvE (for skills) and incorporating PvP results into PvE (favor of the Gods) they create a synergy. The combination of two distinctly different styles attract a larger, more diverse player base. And since PvE players and PvP players both participate in forums such as this, it raises strategy to a whole new level. Thnk about it: Civ III vs the PC and Civ III vs humans are 2 totally differnt styles, require differnt thought patterns, etc. You can make secret pacts that nobody else CAN know about, etc. Yet this creates an incredible synergy, NOT a division. So long as Anet can keep PvP players participating in PvE and PvE players requiring PvP, the knowledge base, user base, and strat base will all be incredibly dynamic and ever-evolving.
You present an good argument, but I think you'll have to look at it from a different view. Personally, I only play PvE, but that's because I suck, and am still a n00b. But I'm ITCHING to play PvP. Also, once a PvE player has finished the stroy, what are they going to do? Play PvP, in all likelyhood.

Actually when I finished it, I quit. Because PvP is too small scale to be fun in my eyes. PvE was fun while it lasted, but still too small and...relatively bland.
*edit* Ok, I quit after I beat it 6 times.

No, some people are merely not as competative with other people, or they hate the drama, the verbal assaults, the outright sexual misbehavior, or any number of turn offs that being involved in large groups of other humans brings to the table.
Some people simply have a preference other than pvp. Fact of life.

This happens in many other RPGs true, where some lvl 80 asshole comes and wipes out a town of lvl 30's, but in GW, it's fair play, near everyone has a max lvl character, and lets face it...it WOULD make it a lot more interesting.

I would also like to see some large scale battles as well with this ruleset, could be very interesting. But how many guilds can put 30 people out there for a battle?
